Key Volunteer Application Information
HOBY South Dakota is nonprofit 501c3 organization staffed entirely by volunteers dedicated to empowering
youth to become better leaders. Our organization is dependent upon the dedication of adults who offer their time
and energy to make the HOBY program a success, and we hope YOU will consider joining our leadership team!
Our leadership team has spent several years strengthening the quality of our flagship summer leadership
seminar and is poised to enhance this and other aspects of the HOBY program. Capable volunteers are currently
sought to fill Key Volunteer positions with the HOBY South Dakota organization.
Priority review of applications will be conducted on May 20, 2011, and will continue until all positions are
filled. It is highly hoped that interested applicants attend all or part of the 2011 Leadership Seminar, June 9-12,
on the campus of Dakota State University in Madison, SD. Terms are set to begin July 1, 2011, and training will
be provided.
All positions listed below are open for submissions, and interested individuals are encouraged to apply using the

General Requirements of All Applicants:
- Must be 21 years of age or older (those turning 21 during the program year may be considered)
- Must commit to attending monthly meetings of the corporate board in addition to other position specific meetings
(in person, Skype or report based attendance options available)
- Must have consistent and reliable access to the Internet and email
- Must adhere to the HOBY Code of Conduct when acting on behalf of the organization
- Must be able to pass a standard background check
Open Positions for the 2011-2012 Program Year
Corporate Board President (CBP) - The CBP is the primary responsible person for all activities conducted
under the HOBY South Dakota name, has fiduciary responsibility, ensures HOBY programs are operated
according to HOBY International standards, and completes state and federal nonprofit reporting requirements.
Ensures the perpetuation of HOBY through strategic, long range planning and assures that HOBY programs and
activities are planned, organized and run according to the goals, policies, guidelines and definitions of HOBY
Board of Trustees. The CBP will need to be familiar with the manuals for all key volunteer roles, as well as
HOBY's policies.
Term: 2 years
Leadership Seminar Chair (LSC) - The LSC is responsible for all aspects of the annual Leadership Seminar.
The LSC plays the lead role in coordinating seminar committee efforts and ensuring committee assignments
are completed in a timely fashion. Duties include recruiting a leadership seminar team, planning the leadership
seminar that complies with HOBY International requirements, and collaboration with other key volunteer roles
for fundraising and Ambassador recruitment. The LSC is also responsible for the leadership seminar budget.
This position reports to the Corporate Board and has additional reporting requirements to HOBY International.
Term: 2 years
Alumni Advisor (AA) - The AA is the administrator of the Alumni Chapter and all Clubs within. The AA advises the
Alumni Coordinators and alumni officers as they organize, promote and implement all aspects of our growing alumni
program. HOBY South Dakota hopes to grow our alumni program by holding regular alumni events including reunions,
service projects, fundraising activities and additional leadership development opportunities. The AA is also hoped to
provide guidance on HOBY's Leadership for Service (L4S) program. The AA is also responsible for the alumni chapter
budget and collaboration with other key volunteers. This position reports to the Corporate Board and has additional
reporting requirements to HOBY International.
Term: 2 years
Community Leadership Workshop (CLeW) Director - The CLeW Director monitors and supervises the operation
of CLeWs in South Dakota. CLeWs offer recent HOBY alumni an opportunity to share their HOBY experience with
a broader base of future leaders, focusing on high school first year students. The CLeW Director will work closely
with the Alumni Advisor to recruit, train and manage alumni to produce CLeWs across the state. It is hoped that
at least one CLeW will be held during the 2011-2012 year, as this is a new program to our team. The CLeW director
is responsible for the budget of each individual CLeW and supervising all aspects of planning and conducting the
activities in the CLeW. This position reports to the Corporate Board and has additional reporting requirements to
HOBY International.
Term: 2 years
Director of Development and Fundraising (DF) - HOBY is a nonprofit organization and depends on the
donations of corporations, businesses, community organizations and individuals to support the program
activities. The DF is responsible for creating and managing a fundraising plan, recruiting a fundraising
team, and coordinating the completion of mass mailings, online fundraising campaigns, special events,
seminar based fundraising and gifts-in-kind solicitation. HOBY attempts to raise nearly $60,000/year to
conduct program activities. This position reports to the Corporate Board and collaborates with other
key volunteers for fundraising in their areas.
Term: 1 year
Director of Ambassador & School Relations (DR) - The DR is responsible for recruiting participants for the
annual leadership seminar and corresponding with selected students and participating schools with any
questions they may have. Responsibilities include developing and managing a recruitment plan, coordinating
the paperwork submission process, and overseeing participant related aspects of the leadership seminar in
coordination with the LSC. This position reports to the Corporate Board as well as the Leadership Seminar Chair.
Term: 1 year
Director of Public Relations (DPR) - The DPR is responsible for all external communications of the
HOBY South Dakota organization and related programs. Responsibilities include writing press releases,
writing web content, designing media packets, increasing local media coverage, and publicizing
HOBY events, activities, and alumni reports. The DPR will also manage the social media channels
(Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube), and will work collaboratively with the Director of Creative Services.
This position reports to the Corporate Board.
